Red State is a 2011 American horror film written and directed by Kevin Smith, with characters inspired by types of fundamentalist religious organizations. The film stars Michael Parks, John Goodman, Academy Award winner Melissa Leo and Stephen Root. Also co-stars Ralph Garman, Kevin Pollak, Kerry Bishe, Haley Ramm, Kevin Alejandro, Anna Gunn, Michael Angarano, and Nicholas Braun.
The film was independently produced, with initial plans to auctioned distribution rights after its premiere at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival; instead Smith purchased the film himself, citing Gibson's The Passion of the Christ as an example of a successfully self-distributed movie. Ultimately, the film had a one-week run at the New Beverly Cinema, followed by a Video on Demand release on September 1 and a home video release on October 18 through Lionsgate.
