The hockey world is waiting with bated breath for the latest word from Sidney Crosby.
Crosby, sidelined since January with a concussion, will address reporters Wednesday at a 12:30 p.m. ET media conference in the Consol Energy Center in Pittsburgh, at which time he is expected to provide an update on his recovery.
It will mark the first time that the Penguins superstar has spoken publicly about his status since last season.
However, the Cole Harbour, N.S., native did issue a statement two weeks ago.
"I appreciate all the support I've received from my family, friends, teammates and fans and from the entire Penguins organization,” Crosby said. "I know they only want the best for my health and for me to be fully ready when I return to game action."
Concussion specialists in Georgia and Michigan have been monitoring the progress made by Crosby, who reached an exertion rate of 90 per cent in training before headaches returned and prompted him to alter his workouts.
The former Hart Trophy winner as NHL MVP was on pace for the best offensive showing of his career in 2010-11, leading the NHL at the time of his injury with 32 goals and 34 assists.
He was back on skates in the public eye in March, but was never cleared for contact in practice or game action, including Pittsburgh's seven-game defeat in the first round of the playoffs to Tampa Bay.
He has expressed frustration with the recovery process, but said he would stay out as long as medically necessary.
Training camp begins on Sept. 17 for the Penguins, with their first regular-season game Oct. 6 in Vancouver on Hockey Night in Canada.
